🚲 Amsterdam

Amsterdam's canals, gabled houses, world-class museums and bikes make it one of Europe's favourite cities. Large cruise ships are being moved out of the city centre, so check your itinerary — some now call at IJmuiden or Rotterdam instead.

Insider tips

  • 🎟️
Anne Frank House online only. Tickets release weeks ahead and sell out.
  • 🚲
Stay out of bike lanes. They're usually red asphalt — and cyclists are fast.
  • 🌷
Tulip season. Keukenhof gardens bloom mid-March to mid-May.
  • 💳
Contactless for trams. Tap in and out.
  • 🚢
Check your docking port. IJmuiden calls need extra travel time.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's museums differ sharply: the Rijksmuseum supports wheelchairs and scooters, while the historic Anne Frank House and Annex require steep stairs.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Rijksmuseum

Wheelchairs, scooters and lifts

The museum documents lifts on all floors, accessible toilets and an access map with benches. Its adult changing area has a mobile hoist and bed but no toilet; check sling arrangements if needed.

Official access information ↗

Anne Frank House

Historic section inaccessible to mobility aids

The historic house and Annex cannot be visited using wheelchairs or other mobility aids because of stairs. The modern section is only partly accessible with staff-assisted lift access; it is a different experience.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Use the Rijksmuseum as the main interior visit, and discuss the limited modern-section alternative directly with Anne Frank House if desired.

Confirm before booking

  • Museum entrance and transfer from your assigned cruise terminal.
  • Whether any canal cruise has device-compatible boarding and an accessible toilet.
