🐢 Barbados

Barbados blends British heritage with Caribbean energy — rum shops, cricket, turtle snorkels and gorgeous west- and south-coast beaches. Bridgetown is also a homeport for southern Caribbean cruises.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Bridgetown's Deep Water Harbour, with a large cruise terminal full of duty-free shops.

  1. 1
    Exit the terminal

Taxis, tour desks and shops are inside.

  2. 2
    Get to town

Bridgetown (UNESCO) is a 20-minute walk or short taxi.

  3. 3
    Hit the beach

Carlisle Bay, Brownes Beach and Pebbles are about 10 minutes by taxi.

💡 Pro move: The Barbados dollar is pegged at 2:1 — when a taxi says '20', check whether that's US or BBD.

Insider tips

  • 💵
Check which dollars. Prices may be in BBD (2 BBD = 1 USD).
  • 🚌
Ride a ZR van. Cheap, lively route taxis — an experience in themselves.
  • 🍤
Try flying fish & cou-cou. The national dish.
  • 🏏
Cricket is life. If there's a match on, locals will tell you all about it.
  • 🌊
West coast is calmest. The Atlantic east coast is wild — admire, don't swim.

Getting around

  • 1
Taxis wait outside the terminal. They don't use meters, so agree the fare before you set off.
  • 2
Ask whether the price is in US or Barbados dollars, since the numbers differ by half.
  • 3
Local minibuses are cheap and lively if you're feeling adventurous.
Good to know: Prices in Barbados dollars look double the US price. Always check which currency you're being quoted.

Quick answers

Barbados cruise port FAQ

Can I walk to a beach from the Barbados cruise terminal?

Carlisle Bay is close but most people take a short taxi. The walk is long and hot along a busy road.

Do I need Barbados dollars?

No. US dollars are widely accepted at a fixed rate of US$1 to BDS$2.

Where can I swim with turtles in Barbados?

Turtle snorkel trips leave from Carlisle Bay and the west coast beaches.

Which side of Barbados has calm water?

The west and south coasts are calm; the east coast is wild and better for scenery than swimming.

Tours, prices, transport fares and pier assignments change. Always confirm with the operator, your cruise line and your ship's all-aboard time before relying on anything here.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Barbados

Harrison’s Cave’s tram tour and its climbing/adventure products are different experiences. Current wheelchair boarding details must come from the park operator, not a broad cave-access label.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Harrison’s Cave Signature Tram

Tram visit documented; wheelchair slot needs confirmation

Chukka’s current product describes an electric-tram journey through the cave, but the reviewed page does not publish device dimensions, lift limits or a guaranteed accessible departure. Request a confirmed wheelchair-capable tram and adapted transfer before paying.

Official access information ↗

Cave show and adventure add-ons

Lighting effects; climbing tour is a separate product

The operator warns that the video can include rapid light changes, sound effects and moving visuals. It separately sells a Cave Hike, Climb, Crawl expedition; buying a park pass does not make every included activity suitable for a wheelchair user.

Official access information ↗

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Ask Chukka to confirm an accessible tram departure that fits your cruise call, with transport and a route excluding any unsuitable trail or climbing activity.

Confirm before booking

  • Is an adapted tram available on your date, and what are its chair size and weight limits?
  • Can the introductory video be bypassed if its lighting or sound is unsuitable?
