Natchez, the oldest settlement on the Mississippi, has more antebellum homes than almost anywhere in the South. Riverboats tie up at Natchez-Under-the-Hill, below the bluff and the historic town.

Step by step
Getting ashore
River ships tie up at the landing at Natchez-Under-the-Hill; a steep hill or shuttle takes you up to downtown.
1
Take the shuttle uphill
Most river lines run a hop-on hop-off shuttle.
2
Tour a mansion
Stanton Hall and Rosalie are close to downtown.
3
Visit Longwood
The unfinished octagonal mansion.
💡 Pro move: Spring and fall 'Pilgrimage' seasons open private homes that are usually closed.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Natchez
Natchez’s historic properties have different access: Melrose offers a first-floor ramp, while the William Johnson House upper-floor lift is reported out of service.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Melrose estate
First floor and outbuildings accessible
NPS describes rubberized wheelchair-suitable paths, accessible outbuilding entrances, a rear ramp to the mansion first floor and accessible restrooms. The second floor is represented by a virtual tour.
NPS lists an automatic entrance and accessible restrooms but explicitly reports the wheelchair lift to the second floor as not working. Reconfirm repairs before booking a tour that depends on reaching upstairs.
Planning suggestion: Select Melrose’s documented first-floor and grounds route, with adapted transport, rather than assuming every Natchez mansion has the same facilities.
