🌸 Charleston

Charleston is one of America's most beautiful cities — antebellum mansions, cobbled lanes, Rainbow Row and outstanding Southern food. Ships sail from Union Pier, right at the edge of the historic district.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Charleston

Fort Sumter is a tide-sensitive boat excursion, not a uniformly step-free fort tour. The departure point matters as much as the ticket.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Fort Sumter ferry

Liberty Square route; tide affects gangways

NPS says the Patriots Point ferry is not accessible. The Liberty Square route has gangways that can become very steep at low tide; the fort-end ramp may be narrow and have a step. Contact the boat operator for the most suitable sailing.

Official access information ↗

Fort Sumter interior

Lifts and mixed ground surfaces

NPS lists brick, crushed-shell and grass areas plus outdoor single-person lifts between fort levels. The accessible toilet remains aboard the ferry; there is no restroom inside the fort. Ask whether every required lift is operating.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Choose a confirmed Liberty Square sailing and a limited fort route suited to your device; use a city museum alternative if tide or lift conditions make boarding unsuitable.

Confirm before booking

  • Which sailing has an acceptable gangway slope for your chair?
  • Are the boat lift and fort lifts operating, and can they accommodate your combined weight and dimensions?
