Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at a long pier leading to the Costa Maya port village — shops, pools, restaurants and a small tram.

  1. 1
    Walk or ride the pier

A small tram runs along the pier to the port village.

  2. 2
    Relax in the port

There's a big pool, beach area and shops right there.

  3. 3
Go to Mahahual or the ruins

Mahahual's beach is a 5-minute taxi; Chacchoben is about an hour inland.

💡 Pro move: Mahahual's beach clubs are a fraction of the port's prices — and the snorkelling off the beach is lovely.

M
Melody's pickI'd head to Mahahual. It's a sweet little beach town with colourful restaurants, and you can find a spot under a palapa, order fresh ceviche and simply relax. It feels much more authentic than the port.

Insider tips

  • 🚕
Taxis to Mahahual are cheap. Shared taxis leave from the port exit.
  • 🐒
Chacchoben is quiet. Far fewer crowds than Tulum or Chichén Itzá.
  • ⏱️
Bacalar is a long day. Only on ship-guaranteed or trusted tours.
  • 💵
Pesos and dollars both work. Dollars at a lower rate.
  • 🧴
Reef-safe sunscreen. Protect the Mesoamerican Reef.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Costa Maya

Chacchoben's dry-weather paths and the transport reaching them are distinct limitations for a Costa Maya ruins day.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Chacchoben ruins

Dirt paths vary with rain

The local tour operator says cleared, generally level main paths can accommodate a wheelchair in dry conditions, but muddy conditions can make them difficult or unusable. This describes ground-level exploration, not access onto the stepped monuments.

Official access information ↗

Chacchoben road transfer

Operator requires standard-vehicle transfer

The same operator reports no adapted vehicles in its Costa Maya arrangements: travelers may need to transfer into a van or sedan and have the chair stored. This is that operator's stated arrangement, not proof that every supplier has the same fleet.

Official access information ↗

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: choose Chacchoben only with an agreed ground-level route, acceptable weather conditions and a transfer method you can actually use.

Confirm before booking

  • Whether another operator can guarantee occupied-wheelchair transport.
  • Current path firmness after rain and access to a suitable restroom.
  • Refund or substitute arrangements if conditions prevent rolling.
