Step by step

Getting ashore

Most ships dock at Gruž port, 3 km north-west of the Old Town. Some anchor off the Old Town and tender to the old harbour.

  1. 1
    Exit at Gruž

Buses, taxis and shuttles wait outside the terminal.

  2. 2
    Get to Pile Gate

Local buses 1A, 1B and 3 reach Pile Gate (the Old Town entrance) in about 15 minutes.

  3. 3
    Walk the walls

The entrance is just inside Pile Gate — go early.

💡 Pro move: Walk the walls first thing in the morning — by midday the heat and crowds on the 2 km circuit are intense.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik's cable car has documented wheelchair infrastructure, while the city-wall operator warns that its heritage sites are difficult to access.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Dubrovnik Cable Car

Accessible stations, cabins, toilets and elevator

The operator confirms accessible station and cabin access, toilets and an elevator. The lower station has a concrete ramp and the upper station an elevator. Reaching the lower station from town involves an uphill route, so consider an adapted vehicle drop-off.

Operator warns of difficult disability access

The heritage operator offers a disability discount but explicitly warns that its sites are difficult to access for people with disabilities. A discounted ticket is not a step-free route; do not make a wall circuit essential without a direct route assessment.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: prioritize a confirmed cable-car visit and selected lower-town streets, with adapted transfer from Gruž or your actual landing.

Confirm before booking

  • Cable-car operation, lift status and device dimensions.
  • Suitable lower-station drop-off and route through crowds.
  • Dock versus tender arrangements and device boarding policy.
