Halifax is Nova Scotia's lively maritime capital, with a 4 km waterfront boardwalk, a star-shaped citadel, Titanic history and the famous lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. It's a favourite on autumn Canada & New England cruises.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Halifax
Halifax Citadel has elevator-assisted historic areas, but its dry ditch and loud military demonstrations create distinct access and sensory considerations.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Citadel ramparts and Army Museum
Elevators available; ditch remains stair access
Parks Canada identifies an elevator through Fortress Halifax to the ramparts and an Information Centre elevator for the Army Museum. A guided-tour section in the dry ditch uses stairs; visitors can skip it and rejoin. Loan wheelchairs and rollators are first-come in season.
The exhibit is wheelchair accessible and air-conditioned, with tactile and multimedia elements. The living-history site includes rifle fire, pipes, drums and the Noon Gun. Choose timing and hearing protection if sudden noise is difficult; toilets are across the Parade Square.
Planning suggestion: reserve suitable transport to the Citadel entrance, use the exhibit/elevator route and omit the dry ditch if steps are unsuitable.
