Juneau is Alaska's capital, reachable only by sea or air, tucked beneath steep mountains on the Gastineau Channel. It's the best port for whale-watching and glacier visits — Mendenhall Glacier is 20 minutes away and humpbacks feed just offshore.

Step by step
Getting ashore
Ships dock at several downtown berths along the waterfront — all within a few minutes' walk of shops and the Mount Roberts Tramway.
1
Walk into downtown
Franklin Street's shops and saloons are steps from the docks.
2
Ride the tram
The Mount Roberts Tramway base is right on the waterfront.
3
Head to the glacier
Shuttles to Mendenhall Glacier leave from the cruise docks; the ride is about 20 minutes.
💡 Pro move: Combine whale-watching and Mendenhall in one tour — they're on the same side of town and it saves time.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Juneau
Mendenhall's short paved viewpoint outing differs substantially from the gravel waterfall walk and stair-bearing East Glacier hike.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Photo Point and visitor center
Paved short route; elevator shown
The Forest Service map describes Photo Point as a paved one-third-mile round trip and marks an elevator serving the visitor center. Confirm that elevator and the center's operating hours before relying on indoor access, especially outside summer.
The same official brochure describes Nugget Falls as a two-mile gravel round trip and East Glacier as 3.5 miles with gravel, rock and stairs. Neither should be substituted automatically for the short paved Photo Point visit in a mobility itinerary.
Planning suggestion: book suitable road transport for Photo Point and the visitor center, with a shorter backup route if weather, flooding or elevator status changes.
