🦅 Sitka

Sitka faces the open Pacific beneath a snow-capped volcano and was once the capital of Russian America. Today it's known for sea otters, eagles at the Alaska Raptor Center, Tlingit totem trails and its onion-domed cathedral.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Large ships dock at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal (Old Sitka Dock), about 9 km north of town. Smaller ships tender to downtown.

  1. 1
    Catch the shuttle

A shuttle runs from the terminal to Harrigan Centennial Hall downtown.

  2. 2
    Walk downtown

St Michael's Cathedral, Castle Hill and the Sheldon Jackson Museum are close together.

  3. 3
    Head out on the water

Wildlife boats leave from the downtown harbour.

💡 Pro move: Sea otters are Sitka's stars — pick a small-boat wildlife tour for the best viewing.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Sitka

Sitka National Historical Park provides a relatively level totem trail and barrier-free visitor exhibits, but the Bishop's House upper floor remains stair-only.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Totem Trail and visitor center

Crushed-gravel trail; weather can affect rolling

NPS describes a generally six-foot-wide, relatively flat crushed-gravel trail that may become muddy or icy. The visitor center has barrier-free exhibits, accessible restrooms, a loan wheelchair and captioned film; a paved route with curb cuts connects from downtown.

Official access information ↗

Russian Bishop's House

First floor only; virtual upstairs option

NPS says the first floor accommodates wheelchairs but has uneven floors and dim light. Stairs reach the second floor; tablets at the desk offer a virtual alternative. Do not book the full house as an unrestricted wheelchair visit.

Official access information ↗

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: use the visitor center and a weather-appropriate portion of the totem trail, with Bishop's House ground-floor interpretation if desired.

Confirm before booking

  • Cruise dock/shuttle or tender arrangements for your sailing.
  • Current gravel firmness and any trail closure.
  • Accessible vehicle space for your specific chair or scooter.
