🐋 Lahaina (Maui)

Lahaina, on Maui's sunny west side, was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire and is still rebuilding. Some ships anchor off West Maui and tender guests ashore for whale watching, Kāʻanapali beaches and snorkel cruises — check your itinerary, as many now call only at Kahului.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Confirm your ship’s actual Maui call and landing before planning a West Maui day. Lahaina Harbor’s limited commercial reopening does not establish normal cruise-tender operations; see the sourced recovery and access notes below.

  1. 1
    Tender ashore

Confirm the permitted landing and device boarding arrangements with the cruise line before booking transfers.

  2. 2
    Head to the beach

Kāʻanapali Beach is about 10–15 minutes north.

  3. 3
    Join a boat tour

Whale watching and snorkel boats depart West Maui harbours.

💡 Pro move: Respect the recovery — historic Front Street is not a sightseeing area right now; spend your money with West Maui businesses that have reopened.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Lahaina (Maui)

Lahaina is recovering and reopening in stages. Do not use a pre-fire historic walking route as evidence of today's accessible entrances, sidewalks or cruise landing.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Getting ashore and reaching the sights

DLNR reopened Lahaina Small Boat Harbor only for limited commercial ocean operations in December 2025. Its October 8, 2026 rebuild update still reports dredging and major pier/wharf projects ahead. Neither notice confirms normal cruise-tender operations or wheelchair boarding for your sailing; verify the actual ship call and landing directly before using an old Lahaina shore plan. Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Lahaina town visit

Recovery restrictions require a current route

Hawaiʻi's tourism authority says businesses have reopened but asks visitors to follow posted restrictions and consult recovery updates. A reopened business or road does not confirm an uninterrupted wheelchair route.

Maui Ocean Center alternative

Documented wheelchair access away from town

Go Hawaii identifies the aquarium's areas as accessible, with complimentary wheelchairs and service-dog access. It offers a land-based marine experience without a boat transfer or beach entry; arrange suitable transport from your actual landing.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Confirm your ship's actual Maui call first; use a verified open local itinerary or an aquarium outing with booked accessible transport.

Confirm before booking

  • Current ship landing and any tender restrictions.
  • Open sidewalks, toilets and entrance routes for each Lahaina business you intend to visit.
