Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro at the Port of Los Angeles. The USS Iowa museum and the San Pedro waterfront are a short walk away; the rest of LA needs a car or tour.

  1. 1
    Walk the waterfront

Battleship USS Iowa is next door to the terminal.

  2. 2
    Ride or drive into LA

Downtown, Hollywood and Santa Monica are 40–60 minutes away depending on traffic.

  3. 3
    Allow for traffic

LA freeways are unpredictable — leave generous time to get back.

💡 Pro move: Carnival ships usually sail from nearby Long Beach, not San Pedro — double-check which terminal is on your cruise documents.

Insider tips

  • 🚗
Traffic is the real schedule. Allow double the map time to get back to the ship.
  • 🅿️
Book parking ahead. Terminal parking can sell out on busy weekends.
  • 🌥️
Pack a layer. Coastal mornings are cool even in summer.
  • 🎢
Disneyland is about 35 miles away. Tempting before or after a cruise, not on a port day.
  • 🚢
Check your terminal. San Pedro and Long Beach are 15–20 minutes apart.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Los Angeles (San Pedro)

Battleship Iowa is a partial-access historic warship. Its own page describes new lifts alongside restrictive route wording, so the exact current route needs direct confirmation.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Battleship Iowa boarding and main deck

Tide-sensitive gangway and uneven decking

The museum warns that gangway steepness changes with water conditions and describes uneven decking, narrow doorways and raised watertight-door thresholds. An accessible boarding ramp does not make the standard ladder-based tour accessible.

Official access information ↗

Iowa interior lift access

Published details need reconciliation

The page lists lifts to the Captain’s Cabin and newer lower-deck exhibits, but also says wheelchair and walker use is restricted to main-deck exterior spaces except the stated areas. Ask which lifts accept your device and which exhibits are actually open.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Book a specifically confirmed accessible Iowa route, with an alternative harbor or museum stop if the tide or required lift is unsuitable.

Confirm before booking

  • Which current lifts carry an occupied chair, and what are their dimensions and weight limits?
  • Will the boarding slope be workable at your planned arrival and departure times?
