🏰 San Juan

San Juan's 500-year-old walled city sits right beside the cruise piers — blue cobblestones, pastel houses and two mighty Spanish forts. It's both a popular port of call and a homeport, with El Yunque rainforest an hour away.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Most ships dock at the Old San Juan piers along Calle La Marina, a few steps from the old city. Overflow ships use the Pan American pier across the bay.

  1. 1
Walk off into Old San Juan

From the Old San Juan piers, the colonial streets begin across the road.

  2. 2
    Pan American pier?

Take a taxi (about 10 minutes) to Old San Juan or Condado.

  3. 3
    Head for the forts

El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal are 15–20 minutes' walk uphill.

💡 Pro move: Explore the forts early before the heat, then retreat to a shady café on Calle Fortaleza for mofongo and a piña colada — invented here.

Insider tips

  • 🏰
Buy one fort ticket for both. National Park entry covers El Morro and San Cristóbal.
  • 🚋
Free trolley. When running, Old San Juan's free trolley helps on the hills.
  • 💵
US dollars and no passport needed. Puerto Rico is a US territory.
  • 🍹
Try a piña colada at its birthplace. Two bars claim it — try both.
  • 👟
Wear grippy shoes. Blue cobblestones get slippery when wet.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in San Juan

San Juan’s two forts offer different accessible levels; old ramps may be steep even where an entrance is described as accessible.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Castillo San Cristóbal

Elevator to main plaza; steep upper ramps

NPS describes accessible restrooms and a theater at the main entrance, plus an elevator to the main plaza. Upper levels use steep historic ramps; the Calle Norzagaray entrance also involves a steep ramp. Confirm the elevator and desired route before visiting.

Official access information ↗

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Main plaza access; lower levels excluded

NPS says the approach sidewalk has an accessible grade and plaza-level exhibits are readily reached. The sixth level uses steep ramps and lower levels are not accessible. There is no parking directly at the fort entrance, so plan the approach distance.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Select San Cristóbal’s elevator-served plaza or El Morro’s main plaza with an agreed vehicle drop-off, rather than a full multi-level fort circuit.

Confirm before booking

  • Is San Cristóbal’s elevator operating and suitable for your device?
  • How far is the approved drop-off from the chosen entrance, and which steep ramps will your guide omit?
