Melody's pickOrient Bay on the French side is my favourite. It feels like a little slice of the Riviera, with chic beach clubs, delicious lunch and that famous turquoise water. Reserve a lounger and enjoy a long, lazy lunch.

Insider tips

  • ✈️
Respect the jet blast. At Maho, stay well back from the fence when planes take off.
  • 🛂
Carry ID across the border. There's no formal check, but bring your passport or cruise card plus ID.
  • 💵
US dollars work everywhere. The French side also uses euros.
  • ⛴️
Water taxi day pass. Good value if you'll go back and forth to the boardwalk.
  • 🏖️
Some French-side beaches are clothing-optional. Orient Bay's south end, notably.

Getting around

  • 1
Taxis wait at the cruise terminal with set rates, often per person.
  • 2
Confirm the fare and whether it's one-way before you go.
  • 3
Water taxis also run between the pier and Philipsburg.
Good to know: At Maho Beach, don't stand behind the fence during take-offs. The jet blast is dangerously strong.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in St. Maarten

St. Maarten has published lift/ramp sightseeing options, with device-weight and assistance limits that matter more than a general island accessibility label.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Easy Island Tour: Wheelchair Accessible

Lift or ramp; weight limit applies

Carnival specifies a step-avoiding route, lift/ramp transport and a combined passenger-and-device maximum of 560 lb. Guides cannot push wheelchairs. The itinerary includes Philipsburg, Marigot and scenic villages, so reserve the wheelchair version rather than a similarly named standard island tour.

Two Capitals & Rum Factory

Dedicated mobility-device booking

Norwegian lists a separate excursion for guests fully dependent on their wheelchair or scooter, requires their own device and identifies accessible restrooms along the route. Companions and ambulatory guests use a different booking code.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: use a confirmed adapted island tour for cross-island sightseeing, with the booked device space and companion places on the same departure.

Confirm before booking

  • Current lift platform size and combined weight capacity.
  • Which stops permit independent rolling and whether your companion must assist.
