Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Heritage Quay and Nevis Street piers in St John's harbour, right beside shops and restaurants.

  1. 1
    Walk into St John's

Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay are at the pier.

  2. 2
    Taxi to a beach

Dickenson Bay and Valley Church are 15–25 minutes away.

  3. 3
    Head south for history

Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights are about 40 minutes by road.

💡 Pro move: Pick a beach on the calm west coast — Valley Church, Darkwood and Ffryes are stunning and less crowded than Dickenson Bay.

Your beach day

Antigua beaches: which one is right for you?

M
Melody's pickMy pick is Valley Church Beach. The water is that impossibly clear turquoise you see in the brochures, it's calm enough for an easy swim, and it rarely feels crowded. Pack a cover-up, grab lunch at a beach bar, and just enjoy a slower Caribbean day.

Getting around

  • 1
Licensed taxis wait at the pier. Government-set fares are posted, and drivers usually quote in US dollars.
  • 2
Confirm the fare, and whether it's per person or per car, before you set off.
  • 3
Arrange your pickup time for the return trip, and keep the driver's number.
Good to know: Ask your driver for a quick island loop on the way back. Many will happily stop at a viewpoint like Shirley Heights for a small extra fee.

Quick answers

Antigua cruise port FAQ

Can I walk to a beach from the Antigua cruise pier?

Not really. The pier is in downtown St. John's, so a short taxi ride is the easiest way to reach the beach. Fort James is the closest.

Do I need Eastern Caribbean dollars?

No. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, though you may get change in EC dollars.

Which Antigua beach is best for families?

Pigeon Point and Valley Church both have calm, shallow water that's comfortable for kids.

Is Antigua good for snorkelling?

Yes. For the best reefs, book a snorkel boat tour rather than snorkelling from shore.

Tours, prices, transport fares and pier assignments change. Always confirm with the operator, your cruise line and your ship's all-aboard time before relying on anything here.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Antigua

Antigua has adapted excursions to Nelson’s Dockyard, but vehicle rules vary sharply between operators and some tours labelled accessible contain transfer requirements.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Nelson’s Dockyard and panoramic drive

Adapted excursion with published device limits

Cunard’s accessible panoramic excursion uses an adapted minibus with hydraulic lift. Its stated limit is 180 kg for guest and wheelchair combined, 1,200 mm long and 700 mm wide; scooters are excluded. These limits apply to that product, not every Antigua tour.

Official access information ↗

Dockyard and Dow’s Hill stops

Accessible toilets documented; clarify conflicting requirements

Carnival’s accessible island-tour listing identifies accessible toilets at the Dockyard and Dow’s Hill and says the route avoids stairs. However, its restrictions also say guests must manage a few vehicle steps and short walking distances. Resolve that contradiction before booking if you cannot transfer.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Select a specifically adapted Dockyard excursion only after written confirmation that its current vehicle and route match your device and transfer abilities.

Confirm before booking

  • Does the actual booked vehicle carry your occupied chair, or must you climb steps?
  • Are your combined weight and dimensions within that operator’s limits, and is your scooter accepted?
