Chile's Pacific cruise gateway — colourful, bohemian Valparaíso clings to steep hills linked by historic funiculars, with Viña del Mar's beaches next door and Santiago 1.5–2 hours inland. Many ships now use nearby San Antonio.

Step by step
Getting ashore
Depending on the line, ships use the port of Valparaíso (near the historic centre) or San Antonio (about 1.5 hours from Santiago airport).
1
Check your port
San Antonio is industrial; most guests transfer straight to Santiago or Valparaíso.
2
Explore Valparaíso
Ride the ascensores (funiculars) up to Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción.
3
Plan your transfer
Pre-book Santiago airport transfers — it's a long drive.
💡 Pro move: Combine your transfer with a Casablanca Valley winery stop between the coast and Santiago.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Valparaíso / San Antonio
Valparaíso's museums have materially different access: Baburizza documents lifts, while the Natural History Museum reports its lift is not operational.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Baburizza Museum
Lifts to permanent and temporary displays
Baburizza states that a palace lift serves its permanent collection and another lift serves temporary exhibitions. Arrange the suitable entrance and vehicle drop-off on Cerro Alegre; museum lifts do not certify the surrounding hill approach.
The museum's official visit page states that universal access is not available and the elevator is not operational. Do not include its upper galleries in a step-free itinerary without a new direct confirmation.
Planning suggestion: Use a preconfirmed adapted transfer to Baburizza and selected exterior viewpoints, rather than a hill walk or an unverified funicular connection.
