🛶 Venice

The city of canals, St. Mark's Basilica and gondolas. Since 2021, ships over 25,000 tons can't sail the Giudecca Canal, so most big ships dock at Marghera on the mainland or call at Trieste or Ravenna instead; smaller ships still reach the historic center.

Insider tips

  • 🎟️
Access fee. Check whether Venice's day-visitor access fee applies on your date.
  • 👟
Bridges. Over 400 bridges, most with steps.
  • ⛴️
Vaporetto pass. Better value than single tickets for several rides.
  • ☕
Stand at the bar. Coffee costs less standing than seated on the piazza.
  • 🌊
Acqua alta. Autumn high tides can flood St. Mark's.

Port-specific access notes

Mobility & accessibility in Venice

Venice is built on bridges with steps, so step-free routes are limited; the vaporetto is the main accessible link.

Planning notes prepared October 25, 2026 for this new guide. Operator access statements have not yet been individually checked, and this is not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Vaporetto lines

Many boats and stops are step-free

Ask about accessible stops and lines; some piers have ramps.

St. Mark's area

Level piazza, but bridges to reach it

The piazza is flat; reach it by water to avoid bridges.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Arrive by vaporetto or water taxi at San Marco and stay around the piazza and waterfront.

Confirm before booking

  • Which terminal will your ship use?
  • Which vaporetto stops near your route are step-free?
