Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Cape Liberty (Bayonne)
Cape Liberty is a cruise gateway rather than the Statue of Liberty ferry landing. A New Jersey sightseeing day needs a separate accessible transfer and carefully chosen monument ticket.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Liberty Island museum and grounds
Accessible alternative to climbing the monument
The Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Foundation describes the island grounds and Statue of Liberty Museum as accessible. Ferries depart Liberty State Park or Manhattan; do not mistake the Cape Liberty berth for a ferry boarding point.
Lift does not provide wheelchair access to the outside balcony
NPS explains that rangers operate the pedestal lift, but wheelchairs are not permitted on the historic outside observation balcony. A pedestal ticket therefore does not promise the same viewing route for every visitor.
Planning suggestion: Reserve an adapted vehicle to Liberty State Park and prioritize island grounds and museum. Confirm ferry boarding and return times separately from cruise embarkation.
