Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Boston
Boston's Freedom Trail includes hills and historic paving, while USS Constitution only permits limited wheelchair deck access under suitable tide conditions.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Freedom Trail
Hills, brick and cobblestone obstacles
The Freedom Trail Foundation warns of slopes, cobblestones, brick sidewalks and uneven terrain. It publishes alternative accessible entrances, including the State House's Ashburton Park entrance and a separate Granary Burying Ground approach; building access varies by historic site.
The Navy limits wheelchair access to the top deck and warns that tides may make the access brow too steep for boarding. The preserved ship is not fully ADA compliant, so do not promise below-deck access or boarding at every arrival time.
