🦩 Bonaire

Bonaire is a diver's and snorkeller's dream — its entire coastline is a protected marine park with healthy reefs just metres from shore. Add salt flats, pink flamingos and a sleepy little capital and you have one of the Caribbean's most relaxed ports.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the South Pier right in Kralendijk; a second pier handles another ship on busy days.

  1. 1
    Walk into Kralendijk

Shops and cafés line the waterfront next to the pier.

  2. 2
    Pay the nature fee

Snorkellers and divers need a Bonaire nature tag — tour operators usually include it.

  3. 3
    Head to the reef

Water taxis to Klein Bonaire leave from the waterfront; shore snorkel sites are a short drive.

💡 Pro move: Bonaire's reefs start right off the shore — even the waterfront in town has excellent snorkelling.

Melody's pickTake the water taxi to Klein Bonaire. It's an uninhabited little island with soft sand and some of the clearest water in the Caribbean, and the snorkelling right off the beach is extraordinary. Bring water and shade, as there are no facilities.

Mobility & accessibility in Bonaire

Bonaire’s published mobility services distinguish a folding wheelchair in a taxi from transport that can take an occupied powerchair.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Taxi 14 island sightseeing

Folding-wheelchair option; occupied-chair transport unverified

Taxi 14 advertises private island tours and a folding-wheelchair taxi option. Its page does not establish a wheelchair lift or occupied-chair securement, so ask whether transferring to a car seat is required.

Local rentals with published user-weight limits

Alternative Rentals Bonaire lists scooters, electric chairs, manual chairs and beach wheelchairs, with 120 kg limits shown for these devices. Delivery is advertised, but confirm collection at a cruise berth and a safe transfer arrangement for a beach chair.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Reserve appropriate equipment and a vehicle before choosing a compact island drive; use a beach wheelchair only with an agreed route and assistance.

Confirm before booking

  • Can your transport take you seated in your own chair, or must it fold and be stowed?
  • Which beach has a suitable drop-off, toilet and assisted transfer arrangement for the reserved chair?
