🎨 Curaçao

Curaçao's capital Willemstad is a UNESCO-listed rainbow of Dutch colonial buildings around a harbour spanned by a floating pontoon bridge. Beyond town are dramatic coves, turtles and a dry, sunny climate south of the hurricane belt.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Mega Pier or the Curaçao Cruise Terminal on the Otrobanda side of St Anna Bay, a short walk from the old town.

  1. 1
    Walk to Otrobanda

Shops and Rif Fort are right by the piers.

  2. 2
    Cross the Queen Emma Bridge

The swinging pontoon bridge leads to Punda and the famous colourful waterfront.

  3. 3
    If the bridge is open

It swings aside for ships — a free ferry shuttles pedestrians across.

💡 Pro move: The best photo of the Handelskade is from the Otrobanda side, before you cross the bridge.

Melody's pickIf you have time, head west to Playa Kenepa. The cliffside view down to that turquoise cove is one of my favourite sights in the Caribbean. For an easier, closer day, Cas Abao has gorgeous water and comfortable sunbeds.

Getting around

  • 1
Taxis wait at the terminal and charge set fares rather than using meters.
  • 2
Confirm the price and currency before you get in, as fares are per taxi.
  • 3
For the western beaches, it's worth booking a driver for a few hours or joining a beach tour.
Good to know: The western beaches are some distance from town. Allow plenty of time to get back to the ship, especially at the end of the day.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Curaçao

Willemstad has wheelchair options, but Hato Caves and several famous natural attractions have specific access exclusions.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Hato Caves

Not wheelchair accessible; 49 approach steps

The cave operator explicitly says the cave is not wheelchair accessible and visitors must climb forty-nine steps to enter and descend them afterward. This is a genuine exclusion, not a minor walking-distance issue.

Willemstad and island scenery

Tourism authority identifies exceptions

Curaçao’s tourism authority describes much of downtown as wheelchair accessible but specifically excludes Playa Grote Knip, Shete Boka National Park and Christoffel Mountain. This is a starting point for selecting a route, not proof of every shop entrance or transport vehicle.

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: Choose a prechecked Willemstad cultural route or adapted scenic drive, replacing Hato Caves with a stop whose entrance and toilet have been confirmed.
