Mobility & accessibility in Chicago
The Art Institute supplies elevator access to all floors and loan chairs; planning the correct entrance and vehicle drop-off makes a museum excursion more manageable.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Art Institute galleries
Elevators and limited loan wheelchairs
The museum’s visitor narrative documents elevators to all floors and complimentary wheelchairs on a first-come basis. Its family restroom is on the first level near the Modern Wing entrance.
The museum’s information-desk guidance identifies a traffic pullout by the Modern Wing at 159 East Monroe. It says Michigan Avenue has ramp access but no drop-off because of traffic. Confirm current loading arrangements with the museum.
Planning suggestion: Use a prebooked transfer to the confirmed Modern Wing entrance and choose a few galleries rather than attempting a full museum and architectural boat tour together.
