Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Detroit
The Detroit Institute of Arts has two documented accessible entrances, and its prominent Woodward entrance is specifically not accessible.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Detroit Institute of Arts arrival
Use John R or Farnsworth Street
The museum identifies John R Street and Farnsworth Street as accessible entrances; Woodward is not. Accessible metered parking is near Farnsworth, with additional spaces in the John R lot.
Loan scooters, accessible restrooms and sensory bags
Free wheelchairs and scooters can be requested at the accessible entrances. Visitor restrooms on floors one to three are accessible and two first-floor family toilets are listed. Sensory bags include headphones, sunglasses and communication cards.
Planning suggestion: Book transport to Farnsworth or John R and build a gallery visit around the accessible entrance rather than a generic downtown walking circuit.
