The world's busiest cruise port sits on its own island between downtown Miami and Biscayne Bay. Most guests are starting or ending a cruise here, so this guide focuses on smooth embarkation, smart transfers and how to squeeze in South Beach, Little Havana or the Everglades either side of your sailing.

Step by step
Getting ashore
PortMiami is a long, narrow island linked to downtown by the Port Boulevard bridge and the Port of Miami Tunnel. Terminals are lettered and spread out, so knowing yours saves real time.
1
Find your terminal
Your cruise documents show a terminal letter. Give it to your driver — dropping at the wrong terminal can mean a long walk with luggage.
2
Drop bags with porters
Porters at the kerb take checked bags straight to the ship. Tip a few dollars per bag and keep medication, documents and a swimsuit in your carry-on.
3
Check in at your boarding time
Arrive at your assigned slot. Security and check-in usually take 30–60 minutes; then you walk straight onto the ship.
💡 Pro move: Fly in the day before. Weather delays and missed connections are the number-one reason people miss a Miami sailing — a hotel night is cheap insurance.

Insider tips
🧳
Pack a day bag. Checked luggage can take hours to reach your cabin — keep swimwear, sunscreen and meds with you.
🛂
Bring your passport even if you don't need it. A closed-loop cruise allows a birth certificate, but a passport makes flying home from a foreign port possible in an emergency.
🚕
Use a flat-rate taxi from MIA. Airport taxis to PortMiami run a set fare — confirm before you go.
🅿️
Book parking ahead. PortMiami's garages charge by the day and fill on peak Saturdays.
⏰
Disembark early if you're flying. Self-assist (carry your own bags) gets you off first — book flights after noon.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Miami
Vizcaya’s first floor and gardens have partial access; the mansion’s upper floor and several garden areas cannot be treated as a fully step-free tour.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Vizcaya Main House
South-side assisted entrance; no wheelchair access upstairs
Vizcaya directs wheelchair visitors to the southern ramp and staff entrance, where security assists. Most first-floor rooms are accessible except the Entrance and East Loggias. The second floor is not wheelchair accessible; a virtual tour covers excluded spaces.
Central formal gardens have accessible routes but mainly dirt/gravel paths. The Garden Mound, Maze, Theater Garden, Tea House, Boat Landing and other named sections have limited or no access. Construction can also change routes.
