🏛️ Progreso

Progreso is the gateway to Mexico's Yucatán — the elegant colonial city of Mérida, cenotes for swimming and two of the world's great Mayan sites, Chichén Itzá and Uxmal. The town itself has a relaxed beach and seafood malecón.

Step by step

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the end of one of the world's longest piers, about 6.5 km offshore. A free shuttle bus runs along it.

  1. 1
    Ride the pier shuttle

Buses carry you along the pier to the cruise terminal on shore.

  2. 2
    Explore Progreso

The malecón and beach are a short walk from the terminal.

  3. 3
    Go inland

Mérida is 45 minutes away; Uxmal about 1.5 hours; Chichén Itzá 2–2.5 hours.

💡 Pro move: Chichén Itzá is a long day — only go with a ship-guaranteed tour. Uxmal is closer and often quieter.

Melody's pickProgreso's beach is pleasant, but for something unforgettable I'd book a cenote tour. Swimming in those crystal-clear natural pools is magical, and you'll still have time for a seafood lunch by the malecón.

Quick answers

Progreso cruise port FAQ

How long is the Progreso pier?

It's one of the world's longest piers. A shuttle takes you to town.

Is there a beach in Progreso?

Yes. The town beach and malecón are right where the shuttle drops you.

Can I visit Chichén Itzá from Progreso?

Yes, but it's a long drive, so book a tour with guaranteed return.

Do I need Mexican pesos?

Not usually. US dollars are widely accepted.

Tours, prices, transport fares and pier assignments change. Always confirm with the operator, your cruise line and your ship's all-aboard time before relying on anything here.

Port-specific access research

Mobility & accessibility in Progreso

Progreso beach excursions are not interchangeable: one popular highlights-and-beach product explicitly excludes mobility devices, while specialist adapted Yucatán tours are advertised.

Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice

Progreso Highlights, Beach, Lunch & Margaritas

Mobility devices excluded

Carnival's published restriction excludes wheelchairs, scooters, canes and rollators on this open-bus and beach-club outing. The presence of a pool, showers and loungers does not establish suitable access for a traveler using these aids.

Official access information ↗

Yucatán and Xcambó adapted tour

Specialist accessible-van option advertised

Accessible Caribbean Vacations advertises a private wheelchair-accessible van for its Yucatán highlights and Xcambó ruins excursion. Obtain the exact ground-level ruins route and toilet arrangements; the van specification alone does not describe every stop.

Official access information ↗

A practical way to plan this port

Planning suggestion: request the adapted van itinerary by name and verify the ruins route instead of booking a standard beach package.

Confirm before booking

  • Adapted pickup from the cruise pier and device dimensions.
  • Xcambó surfaces after rain and accessible toilets at planned stops.
