Albany is New York's capital and a favourite stop on Hudson River cruises. Small riverboats tie up at the downtown waterfront, a short walk or ride up the hill to the State Capitol and Empire State Plaza.

Step by step
Getting ashore
River cruise ships dock along the Hudson at the downtown riverfront. The Capitol district sits up the hill — most lines run a shuttle or included tour.
1
Cross to downtown
The Hudson River Way pedestrian bridge links the riverfront to downtown.
2
Head up State Street
It's a steady climb to the Capitol and Empire State Plaza.
3
Tour the Capitol
Free guided tours run on weekdays.
💡 Pro move: The Corning Tower observation deck on Empire State Plaza (42nd floor) is free and has the best view of the Hudson Valley.

Mobility & accessibility in Albany
Albany’s museum visit has different requirements from a riverfront warship tour. The State Museum offers loan mobility aids, but its entrance arrangements changed in 2026.

Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
New York State Museum
Use Madison Avenue entrance
The museum directs all visitors to Madison Avenue because the concourse entrance is closed. Wheelchairs, walkers and strollers can be borrowed at the Main Lobby desk. Restrooms are on the first floor; ask staff for the elevator route if including the fourth-floor terrace.
The state’s indoor Capitol tour map marks elevators, accessible entrances, the Visitor Center and security checkpoints in the multilevel Plaza complex. Use that route rather than the monumental exterior stairs, and confirm current entry hours with the Visitor Center.
Planning suggestion: Make the State Museum the principal indoor stop and arrange transport to its current entrance. Do not buy a combined historic-ship excursion on the assumption that museum access extends to USS Slater.
Confirm before booking
Confirm the accessible drop-off at Madison Avenue and the operating elevator to any upper-floor exhibits.
Ask USS Slater directly about gangway gradient and which compartments your device can reach before adding it.
