Mackinac Island is a car-free Victorian time capsule between Lakes Michigan and Huron. Horses, bikes and feet are the only transport, and fudge shops line Main Street. Ships usually anchor and tender into the harbour.

Port-specific access research
Mobility & accessibility in Mackinac Island
Fort Mackinac’s scenic front ramp is not a wheelchair entrance: it ends in twenty-seven steps. The rear route and a suitable uphill transfer are essential.
Published sources reviewed October 17, 2026. This is desk research, not an on-site access audit. Access can change with the ship, berth, equipment and operating conditions.
Attractions and excursions: what changes the choice
Fort Mackinac entrance
Use north/rear entrance; steep approach
The park directs wheelchair and scooter users to the north entrance. Fort Street is very steep; the south ramp ends in twenty-seven steps. A horse taxi with a lift may be available, but must be confirmed.
Several buildings have entrance steps, and the Soldiers’ Barracks elevator only accommodates smaller motorized chairs. Alternate programs interpret some inaccessible spaces. The park also documents an adult changing table and accessible restrooms.
Planning suggestion: Reserve a suitable transfer to the rear entrance and choose reachable buildings with the park’s access guide, rather than following the standard front approach.
Confirm before booking
